Mitral Regurgitation

Mitral regurgitation is ilsually well tolerated during pregllancy because of left ventricular unloading secondary to physiological fall in systemic vascular resistance. The usual medicatioi~s including digoxin and diuretics are indicated particularly in patients with left ventricular systolic dyslunction. Hydralazine can be used to reduce left ventricular after load. Surgeiy is to be avoided during pregnancy because of increased incidence of fetal loss and considered only in patients with severe heart failure and heinodyna~nic compromise in spite of optimum ~nedical therapy.
