Antiarrhytilmic drugs (AADs) are classified according to whether they exert blocking actions predominantly on sodium, potassium, calcium channels or beta-adrenoceptors. Vaughan Williams classificalion is widely known and provides n useful framework in which to consider ailtiarrhythmic drugs. A more realistic view of antiamhythrnic agents is provided by the "Sicilian gambit" approach to drug classification whicl~ is based on pl~iu'macological site of action.
